Irani, CEO of Helios Capital India, and a veteran of Indian equity markets with more than three decades of experience.

This was a fascinating conversation because Dinshaw challenges several ideas that investors tend to accept as gospel.

Perhaps the biggest one?

“Long-term investing is a myth.”

His argument is not that investors should become short-term traders. At Helios, a stock may remain in the portfolio for years, but it has to repeatedly earn the right to stay there.

The team revisits its assumptions every three to six months rather than buying a company based on a five-year story and refusing to change its mind.

We also go deep into Helios’ 8-stage elimination investing framework, how they think about new-age businesses like Paytm, Zomato and Ather Energy, why they exited private banks, where they see opportunities across sectors, and perhaps the hardest question in investing: when should you actually sell a winning stock?

Key Takeaways

1. Long-term investing does not mean blindly holding forever

For Dinshaw, the long term is effectively a series of shorter periods. Every three to six months, the investment thesis is reassessed. If the fundamentals continue to justify ownership, the stock stays. If they don’t, being a “long-term investor” isn’t a reason to hold on.

2. Eliminate first, invest second

One of the most interesting parts of the conversation is Helios’ 8-stage elimination framework. Instead of starting with reasons to buy a company, the process systematically looks for reasons to reject it based on factors such as industry characteristics, management quality and valuation.

Only the companies that survive the filters become serious candidates for the portfolio.

3. New-age companies require a different valuation lens

We discuss why Helios is willing to own companies such as Paytm, Zomato and Ather Energy, even when some traditional investors consider these businesses difficult or impossible to value.

Dinshaw explains how the team thinks about rapidly evolving businesses where conventional historical metrics may not capture the size of the future opportunity.

4. Zomato versus Swiggy is about more than food delivery

Our conversation moves from food delivery into quick commerce, and why investors need to separate the economics and competitive dynamics of the different businesses sitting inside these platforms.

5. Sometimes the most important portfolio decision is what you stop owning

Dinshaw explains why Helios exited private banks, why the team has avoided PSU banks, and how changing industry dynamics can alter an investment thesis even in sectors that were once market favourites.

6. Selling is as important as buying

What do you do when you’ve already made substantial money in a stock?

Dinshaw walks through how Helios thinks about selling winners, challenging an existing thesis and dealing with the inevitable doubt that comes with getting investment decisions wrong.

7. Look for asymmetric opportunities, not just popular narratives

We also explore opportunities across defence, manufacturing, power, AI and small caps, investing when markets are at all-time highs, anchor investing in IPOs, and how Helios looks for situations where the potential upside meaningfully outweighs the downside.

Chapters

00:00:00 - Intro
00:01:29 - Contrarian market beliefs
00:01:54 - Overcoming long-term bias
00:07:11 - The rationale for Paytm
00:12:11 - Valuing new-age companies
00:18:20 - Zomato: Food vs. Quick Commerce
00:19:44 - Zomato vs. Swiggy
00:20:49 - The elimination framework filter
00:23:03 - Top sectors for the next 3-5 years
00:26:56 - Why Helios exited private banks
00:30:57 - Avoiding PSU banks
00:34:30 - Incumbent auto vs. Ather Energy
00:40:31 - Defense, Manufacturing & Power
00:43:34 - India’s role in the AI boom
00:45:50 - When to sell a winning stock
00:47:10 - Timeless investing principles
00:49:09 - Handling doubts about stock picks
00:51:09 - Achieving high returns in flat markets
00:52:28 - Anchor investing in IPOs
00:54:09 - Learning from big mistakes
00:56:01 - Finding asymmetric upside
00:59:05 - Personal vs. public money management
01:00:10 - Investing in small caps at all-time highs
01:01:33 - Rapid Fire Segment

Watch the full episode of The India Opportunity Show.

—

If you’re new here, I would love to have you subscribe to the newsletter and our YT channel for more updates. Beyond building Eternis into a global specialty chemicals business, he has spent years in the boardrooms of some of India’s most respected companies, including Marico, Astral, Westlife Foodworld, Kaya, Apcotex and Sudarshan Chemical Industries.

And what stood out to me throughout this conversation was how little of enduring business-building is about chasing growth at any cost.

At one point, Rajen deliberately shrank his business before rebuilding it.

He explains why that decision was necessary, how winning his first major US customer helped establish Eternis globally, and the customer-first decisions that ultimately allowed an Indian specialty chemicals company to earn trust in international markets.

We also go deep into capital allocation — one of the most important and under-discussed skills in business.

How do you decide whether the next rupee should go toward expanding existing capacity, entering a new market, making an acquisition or simply staying on the balance sheet? And how should those decisions change as a company matures?

Rajen also shares what decades of sitting on boards have taught him about good governance: what separates a genuinely effective board from one that merely fulfils its statutory obligations, how boards should behave during periods of uncertainty, and why the relationship between owners, management and independent directors matters so much.

One of my favourite parts of the conversation is his reflection on giving up operational control.

For entrepreneurs — and particularly family-business promoters — stepping away can be deeply emotional. Rajen speaks candidly about the psychology of doing it, and why ultimately handing greater responsibility to professional management became one of the best decisions of his career.

We also discuss global expansion, acquisitions, sustainability and ESG, the role AI may play in traditional businesses, and what it means to continue learning after decades in industry.

But beneath all of these topics is a larger question:

How do you build something that can outlast you?

Rajen’s answers are refreshingly devoid of slogans. They are rooted instead in patience, institutional thinking, governance, humility and an ability to make difficult decisions before circumstances force you to.

For entrepreneurs, operators, investors and anyone involved in a family business, there is a lot of enduring wisdom in this conversation.

In this episode, we cover:

00:00 – Introduction
00:54 – Identifying opportunities in the specialty chemicals industry
07:00 – Winning the first US customer and building a global business
09:20 – Using acquisitions to drive growth and scale
13:33 – Navigating geopolitical uncertainty as a business leader
14:53 – How boards should make decisions during difficult periods
16:07 – What separates a great board from an ineffective one
21:22 – Advice for Indian founders with global ambitions
24:06 – The psychology of giving up operational control
28:39 – How businesses should approach sustainability and ESG
33:05 – Rajen’s framework for capital allocation
36:15 – The toughest periods of his career and what they taught him
40:03 – How his relationship with legacy, money, power and success has evolved

If you’re trying to build a company that can compound over decades — rather than merely grow for the next few years — I think you’ll find this conversation particularly valuable.

Watch the full episode of The India Opportunity Show.

—

If you’re new here, I would love to have you subscribe to the newsletter and our YT channel for more updates. His thesis rests on two important forces: the potential revival in corporate earnings and the liquidity that continues to support markets.

From there, we get into where the next opportunities — and risks — may be emerging.

We discuss the changing profit pools within financial services, how he thinks about private banks versus PSU banks, and why sector leadership can shift dramatically across market cycles.

We also explore one of the biggest questions facing investors today: what happens to traditional IT businesses in an AI-first world? Shridatta shares how he separates genuine disruption from market narrative, and the framework he uses to evaluate new-age technology, quick-commerce and platform businesses where traditional valuation metrics may not always tell the full story.

The conversation also moves into the EV transition, and a particularly important investing question: how much should you be willing to pay for a business simply because it operates within a powerful long-term industry tailwind?

Some of my favourite parts of the episode, though, are his reflections on investing itself.

Having lived through the extraordinary market cycles of 2006–2009, Shridatta speaks candidly about missed multibaggers, mistakes fund managers repeatedly make, and why the ability to remain objective may ultimately matter more than having the smartest market view.

For anyone trying to become a better long-term investor, there are several useful frameworks in this conversation.

In this episode, we cover:

00:00 – Introduction
01:20 – How Shridatta sees the current Indian market
06:52 – Sector opportunities and changing profit pools in financials
10:50 – Private banks vs PSU banks
16:34 – AI disruption and the future of Indian IT
22:50 – Lessons from the 2006–2009 market cycles
28:07 – How to evaluate new-age tech and quick-commerce businesses
34:30 – Missing multibaggers and the biggest investing mistakes
39:43 – Shridatta’s core framework for stock picking
43:56 – Investing through the EV transition
46:55 – How to think about valuations in long-term growth industries
48:26 – Advice for young investors
53:44 – Building the right investing temperament
59:06 – Rapid Fire

If you invest in Indian equities — professionally or personally — I think you’ll find this conversation particularly useful.

Watch the full episode of The India Opportunity Show.

—

If you’re new here, I would love to have you subscribe to the newsletter and our YT channel for more updates. Coming from a legacy family that once owned more than 2,000 acres of land in metropolitan Mumbai, he found himself at just 21 years old responsible for unlocking and managing nearly 600 acres of heavily encumbered land. That experience eventually shaped a career spanning complex property transactions, capital deployment and cross-border real estate investing.

In this conversation, we go beyond the usual debate of “India vs Dubai” and look at the actual math of owning property across India, the UK, Dubai, Singapore and Australia.

Why can Indian residential property become a negative-carry asset? Why do secondary UK cities such as Manchester and Birmingham potentially offer better rental economics than London? Is Dubai still attractive after its extraordinary run-up? When does leverage improve returns, and when does it destroy them? And for an Indian investor, does it sometimes make more financial sense to rent your home and invest the capital elsewhere?

Rajanya breaks down rental yields, borrowing costs, leverage, currency appreciation, property cycles, taxation, inheritance rules and the practical challenges of moving capital overseas under India’s LRS framework.

We also unpack his remarkable personal journey: taking control of a complicated 600-acre estate, navigating the 2008 financial crisis, investing internationally long before it became mainstream for Indian investors, exiting Australia, navigating Brexit and eventually building Advent Wealth.

If you’re evaluating whether your next real estate investment should be in India, Dubai, London, Manchester, Birmingham or Singapore, this conversation offers a framework for thinking about property not just as an emotional asset, but as an investment.

Chapters

00:00 Introduction
01:08 Should Indians Invest in Real Estate Outside India?
03:00 Understanding India’s 10-Year Property Cycles
06:04 UK vs India: How Real Estate Cycles Differ
07:14 Is Dubai Real Estate in a Bubble?
08:42 Dubai vs Singapore vs London vs India
10:43 Investing in Dubai: Villas vs Apartments
13:00 Are 1 & 2-Bedroom Dubai Apartments Good Investments?
16:02 The Currency Advantage of Investing Overseas
18:03 Why Indian Real Estate Can Become a Negative-Carry Asset
21:08 India’s Structural Growth vs UK Political Risk
23:39 How UK Property Can Generate Positive Cash Flow
26:47 Is Renting + Investing Better Than Buying a Home in India?
28:09 Residential vs Commercial Real Estate: Understanding Yields
31:16 LRS Limits & Buying a $300K Property in the UK
33:41 Property Taxes: Singapore vs UK
36:26 Why the UK’s Average House Price Can Reduce Investment Risk
39:48 UK Inheritance Tax: What Indian Investors Need to Know
41:50 Rajanya’s Story: Taking Over 600 Acres at Just 21
45:09 Deploying Capital & Surviving the 2008 Financial Crisis
48:22 How He Started Investing Overseas
51:17 Why He Exited Australian Real Estate
56:01 Brexit, London Real Estate & the Birth of Advent Wealth
1:00:13 How Complex Cross-Border Property Deals Are Structured
1:04:00 Final Takeaways

—

If you’re new here, I would love to have you subscribe to the newsletter and our YT channel for more updates. Oil is spiking, the dollar is climbing, AI is supposedly about to hollow out Indian IT, and somewhere a fresh geopolitical shock is always brewing. It is exhausting, and most of it is noise. The hard part is knowing which part is not.

So for this episode I sat down with Neelkanth Mishra, one of the clearest macro minds in the country, to help me tell the difference.

If you do not know him: Neelkanth is Chief Economist at Axis Bank and Head of Global Research at Axis Capital, sits on the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council, and chairs UIDAI. He has just been appointed India’s Executive Director at the World Bank, which means this may be one of the last long conversations he does before he leaves for Washington. I did not want the polished version. I wanted the honest one.

We got into the questions I suspect most of us are quietly worried about. Are India’s economic fears overblown? What would a real oil shock actually do to us? Could the rupee touch 150 to the dollar? And the one I kept circling back to: is AI a genuine threat to TCS and Infosys, or the biggest opportunity India has had in a generation? He was generous about where he is bullish, and honest about where he is not.

It is one of the most clear-headed conversations I have had on this show about how to invest and build through uncertainty. It was a company weighed down by debt, eroding trust, and a very real possibility of collapse. What followed was not a smooth turnaround, but a decade-long test of resilience, conviction, and leadership under pressure.

In this conversation, Nanda opens up like never before on what it feels like to lead when everything is falling apart, why most entrepreneurs make their biggest mistakes during success, and how he won back the confidence of investors like Rakesh Jhunjhunwala.

From choosing Kubota as a partner to absorbing the discipline of Japanese business culture, this episode goes beyond strategy. ValueQuest’s philosophy rests on three pillars: the Wisdom to see, the Fortitude to hold, and the Courage to capitalize - a framework Ravi has lived by across multiple market cycles.

Hope you enjoy watching!

Key Takeaways:

1. Corrections are the price of admission India’s bull market is intact, but volatility, especially in small and midcaps, is not a bug, it’s a feature. Investors who can’t stomach drawdowns shouldn’t be in equities. The ones who hold conviction through pain are the ones who compound.

2. Energy transition is the megatrend of our lifetime, but pick your sub-sector carefully Ravi has his highest conviction here, but warns it’s a broad theme. Power transmission is the most immediate opportunity. The grid has to be upgraded before any of the renewable buildout can actually work. Early-mover companies with limited competition stand to win disproportionately.

3. Selling is harder than buying, and most investors get it wrong There’s no glory in the exit, so most people either hold too long or sell too early. Ravi’s view: define your sell criteria before you buy. Exit when the thesis breaks or when capital has a clearly better home, not because the market is scary.

4. Your investment philosophy is your most valuable asset Stock picks change. Markets change. What doesn’t change is the framework you use to make decisions. Without a written, tested philosophy, you’ll make inconsistent calls, especially under pressure. Wisdom to see, fortitude to hold, courage to capitalize.

5. Trust is built in downturns, not bull markets Anyone looks like a genius in a rally. What separates enduring fund managers and enduring investor-client relationships is how you communicate and behave when portfolios are hurting. Honesty and intellectual clarity during pain is what creates lifetime loyalty.

Chapters:
00:00 Teaser
01:40 India’s Bull Market History & Corrections
06:05 Economic Slowdown & RBI Measures
07:15 Market Correction, Valuations & War Impact
08:45 Risks in Small & Midcap Investing
10:10 Building Investor Trust During Downturns
12:52 Equity as an Asset Class & Market Cycles
16:55 Private vs Public Market Investing
18:57 Energy Transition: A Mega Investment Theme
26:12 Manufacturing, Defense & Aerospace Opportunities
30:56 Defense Sector & Supply Chain Insights
36:18 Financial Sector Evolution & Capital Markets
42:20 Leadership Impact on Banking Investments
43:55 Portfolio Concentration & Position Sizing
46:48 Building Your Investment Philosophy
54:11 Selling Strategy & Exit Challenges
58:13 Common Investor Mistakes & Equity Mindset
1:00:23 Building an Investment Institution & Team
1:02:47 Keys to Long-Term Wealth Creation
1:03:52 Rapid Fire: Stocks, Books & Investing Concepts

—

If you’re new here, I would love to have you subscribe to the newsletter and our YT channel for more updates. He is currently a Director at Enam Holdings, a multi-billion dollar family office that manages the wealth of some of India’s leading business families.

Chokhani previously served as CEO of Enam Securities, one of India’s most influential homegrown investment banks, where he led its landmark $400 million merger with Axis Bank to create Axis Capital, which he later headed as Managing Director & CEO.

Over his career, he has played a pivotal role in shaping India’s capital markets—advising global funds, co-founding Enam Asset Management, and serving as Chairman of TPG Growth India.

Known for blending deep market insight with long-term thinking, Chokhani is widely followed for his views on wealth creation, global capital flows, and India’s structural growth story. He also serves on the boards of several listed companies and remains an influential voice in India’s investing ecosystem.

Key Takeaways
1. Markets Are a Real-Time Test of Your Psychology
Capital markets are one of the fastest feedback systems in the world. They constantly expose your ego, fear, bias, and attachment—making investing not just a financial activity, but a tool for deep self-awareness and personal growth.

2. Detachment Is the Investor’s Biggest Advantage
Great investors understand they are not the “doer.” Entrepreneurs create value—investors participate in cycles. The ability to stay detached from outcomes allows for rational decisions, timely exits, and long-term survival in volatile markets.

3. Everything Moves in Cycles—No Company Is Permanent
Markets, industries, and even great companies go through cycles. Wealth is created not by chasing what’s working today, but by understanding where you are in the cycle and staying objective—even when narratives are strong.

4. The World Is Entering a New Macro Era (Like the 1930s)
The post–World War II global order is breaking down. Rising geopolitical conflict, de-dollarization, and power shifts suggest a new economic regime. It is a reset of complacency.

For the past 18 months, markets have been conditioned to believe in three things:

Liquidity will always come back

Geopolitics is noise, not risk

Every dip is a buying opportunity

That regime is now being tested.

The Return of Fear

Fear does not enter the market gradually.
It arrives suddenly, violently, and without invitation.

In the last few weeks, we’ve seen:

Sharp unwinds in crowded trades

Over-owned sectors correcting disproportionately

Retail confidence beginning to crack

This is not panic yet.
But it is no longer blind optimism.

As Aswath Damodaran often reminds us, markets are a function of narratives. When the narrative shifts, price follows faster than fundamentals.

What Smart Money Already Knew

The most important lesson I’ve learned from conversations with investors like Ramesh Damani, Sanjoy Bhattacharya, and Manish Chokhani is this:

The market doesn’t reward intelligence. It rewards temperament.

There is a second layer to this. As Chokhani emphasizes, great investing is not about reacting to cycles, but surviving them with discipline and clarity of thought.

Long before the headlines turned negative, positioning had already become:

Crowded

Consensus-driven

Momentum-heavy

When everyone owns the same trade, the exit becomes narrower than the entry.

India: The Reverse AI Trade

India has been the consensus overweight.

For good reason:

Structural growth

Political stability

China plus one tailwinds

But consensus is a dangerous comfort.

As Manish Chokhani often points out, markets tend to extrapolate the recent past far too easily. That is where risk quietly builds.

A useful framing comes from Christopher Wood, who has described India as the “reverse AI trade”.

Global markets have been driven by a narrow AI-led rally. Capital has crowded into a handful of names and themes. India, in contrast, has been a broader structural story.

The implication is important.

When the AI trade stops working, capital will look for the next structural allocation. That is when India could begin to outperform again.

What we are seeing today is not a rejection of India. It is a re-pricing of expectations within a global capital rotation.

The question is no longer:
“Is India a long-term story?”

The question is:
“At what price does that story make sense?”

Greed Was Easy. Discipline Is Not.

The last cycle rewarded:

Aggression

Narratives

Participation

This phase will reward:

Patience

Cash

Selectivity

As Hiren Ved said in a recent conversation, cycles don’t end because businesses stop growing. They end because expectations outrun reality.

And as Manish Chokhani would argue, the real edge is not predicting the cycle. It is staying rational when others are not.

What I’m Watching Now

Not headlines. Not noise.

But signals:

Are promoters buying or selling?

Are high-quality stocks correcting or just the froth?

Is liquidity tightening globally?

Are new leaders emerging quietly?

Because every correction plants the seeds of the next bull market.

The Only Question That Matters

In moments like this, investors ask:
“Should I sell?”

The better question is:
“Was I right for the right reasons?”

If your thesis hasn’t changed, price is information, not instruction.

Closing Thought

Greed makes you feel intelligent.
Fear makes you feel honest.

As Manish Chokhani articulates in essence, investing is a game of temperament, not brilliance.

This is the phase where narratives get tested, conviction gets priced, and discipline gets rewarded.

The market is not asking you to be smarter.

It is asking you to be calmer.

— Shrishti Sahu
The India Opportunity Show

How are the Top 1% Investors Investing in 2026 | Motilal Oswal's Director of Equity Research, Gautam Duggad on The India Opportunity Show with Shrishti Sahu

Hello everyone, welcome to The India Opportunity Show where you get a front-row seat to people building India’s future.

Shrishti Sahu

Hello everyone, welcome to The India Opportunity Show where you get a front-row seat to people building India’s future. As the Chairperson and Managing Director of First Global, she has spent decades studying how capital actually behaves—not in theory, but across cycles, geographies, and regimes. What distinguishes her is not bold prediction, but disciplined probability-based thinking.

In a market often dominated by narratives, Devina brings data. She is deeply skeptical of popular stories, fashionable themes, and linear projections. Instead, she focuses on base rates, historical patterns, and the often-uncomfortable truth that most outcomes in markets are driven by factors investors prefer to ignore—risk, mean reversion, and the limits of forecasting.

In our conversation, she challenged several deeply held assumptions about Indian equities, global diversification, and the tendency of investors to confuse recent success with structural superiority. Her perspective is particularly valuable in moments of optimism, when capital tends to forget that discipline matters most precisely when things seem obvious.

Devina represents a school of investing that is calm, evidence-led, and unapologetically rational. In the context of India’s capitalist moment, her voice serves as an essential counterweight—reminding us that while India’s opportunity is real, capital must still be allocated with humility, rigor, and respect for uncertainty.

⏱️ Chapters
0:00 How to think about asset allocation?
03:36 Building global diversified playbook
11:29 Why asset allocation matters most?
16:55 Are Indian markets actually expensive?
19:13 Should investors stop SIPs now?
20:52 How often should stocks be sold?
26:29 When to sell underperforming winners?
40:27 What to ask fund managers?
48:53 Which sectors look risky today?

—

If you’re new here, I would love to have you subscribe to the newsletter and our YT channel for more updates.
